RE: MY NEW JOB - TEACHING "AMERICAN" TO THE CHINESE
A chairde,
As some of you know, I was just hired by an internet / phone / technology
company in Syosset to teach American English over their internet phone setup
to Chinese people in, yep you guessed it, China. Actually, it's a bit
easier than that. As I understand it (and it's in the planning stages with
a trial run to start this weekend), the idea is to have nice, easy-going
conversations with Chinese students who already have a pretty fair command
of English but who want to get better at it by talking to real Americans.
So the American speaker would correct their usage ("go to the movies", not
"go to the cinema"), encourage them to talk, and let them get used to
hearing an American accent.
There's no need to be a teacher, just an American speaker 18 years of age or
older (no matter where you were born). Right now the thought is that after
initial coordination in Syosset (maybe a week or two), the American speaker
can work from home with the technology company supplying the internet phone
setup. This company can't pay much ($7-8 an hour) but the idea is for this
to be easy extra money in the comfort of one's own home for something
somebody might like to do for fun anyway.
If this appeals to you, please let me know because they're serious about
recruiting for this. Also, I've been telling them about SGGT and how we
organize ourselves to teach Irish, so they asked me to ask you. I've
already explained the risk that you would teach Gaeilge to the Chinese, but
they seem to be willing to take that risk.
Le gach dea-ghuí, - Gearóid
